Here’s something to try out if you want to start budgeting: for every $5 bill you receive, save it. At the end of every month, count how much money you’ve saved up from just those bills alone. Five bucks doesn’t seem like much but you’ll be surprised how fast things add up.

Hopefully this tip will motivate you to put some money aside while working in the summer or at you full-time job.

Why Can’t I Get My Dream Job? – A Frank Answer

So you’ve been looking for a job for a while and nothing is working. You’ve created a great resume, you interview excellently, but for some reason nobody is calling you back. You shake your fist at the economy, blame the poor job market, and bitterly think about how good you could be if they just gave you a chance. You need experience to get a job, and a job to get experience, this whole system is broken and designed specifically to ruin you – you who could be so amazing if only the world weren’t so pitted against you – how is anyone expected to succeed like this?

Stop. Stop right there.

Yes, the system is broken – that’s just how it goes. But that is not an excuse to sit at home all day complaining about it. Successful people happen every day, all the time, and they deal with the same system you do. Generally speaking, they aren’t special. They’re not smarter than you, or better looking than you or born into better circumstances. The only thing separating you from the hundreds of people finding success right at this moment is the effort you put into what you do.

Give it All You Got:
Yes, the job market is terrible. Successful people skirt that and make their own opportunities. Want to own a bakery? Start baking every single day. Learn to make the most delicious goddamn cupcakes on the face of this good green earth and give samples to your friends. Start selling them to their friends. Get a crap job on the side and save like a maniac with the goal of a bakery in mind. Be so good no one can ignore you. Be so good people line up outside just for a bite of one of your delicious pastries. Put hours and hours into perfecting what you do. If you want to be successful, you can’t half ass anything. Because there are 20 people who want the same thing as you do and they’re willing to put in the work.

Prepare Your Goals in Advance:
Make a list every morning of three things you want to do that will inch you closer to your goal. Find people who are doing what you want to do, ask to buy them lunch, and pick their brain about every detail of their success. Find out what kind of person excels in the industry and become that person. Zero in on this one thing and make your life about it. Live and breathe it, research it to death, do as much as you can on your own so when you’re finally being considered for that job, you’ll have a lot to show them.

Look Professional:
Pay attention to your appearance – in a perfect world it wouldn’t matter, but we don’t live in that world. People’s first impression of who you comes from how you look, so look like someone they’d want to hire. Maybe they’d love you if they got to know you, but that’s not good enough. Make them love you from the moment they see you until the moment you leave. Be charming and friendly and professional and show them you have initiative and the skills they want.

If all that sounds like too much effort then you have no right to complain about not having the job you want. If you press full speed ahead into your goals, they’ll get done. But if you’d like to lazily wander after them, then you will only experience mediocrity throughout your career path.

 

How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Do you just feel like falling right back into bed every morning when you wake up? Need ten cups of coffee just to function? Then we think you might need a sleep intervention.

Not getting a proper amount of sleep can affect every aspect of your life. It can slow your thinking, hinder your memory, make it easier to get sick and even cause depression. And worst of all, it may prevent you from having the energy and determination to search for jobs!

We don’t want any of that stuff to happen to you, so we’re going to tell you how to make the most of your good night’s sleep.

The Four Stages of the Sleep Cycle:
You should understand a few things about sleep before you try to improve its quality – namely what sleep cycles are and their stages. So first off, a sleep cycle is a 90 minute cycle of four stages: two REM (Rapid Eye Movement, which is caused by dreaming) and two non-REM. People generally need five or six cycles to feel well rested, so that’s what you should aim for. If you can’t fit all of them in, it’s possible to feel adequately rested on just three or four, but you need to wake up at the right time.

Stage 1
– A very light sleep. The body is either easing into a shallow sleep from a deep one (stage 4), or easing into a shallow sleep from wakefulness. People are easily awoken at this stage with very little side effects. It’s about 10-15 minutes long and is the window we want to wake ourselves up in – but we’ll get to that later.

Stage 2 In stage 2 your body is preparing for deep sleep. You’re less easily awakened here and your heart rate slows, and body temperature drops. Waking up isn’t terrible, but it’s sort of disorienting.

Stage 3 & 4 These are your stages of deep sleep: 4 being much deeper than 3. They’re when the REM sleep sets in, and quite difficult to wake from. If you are awoken from stage 3 or 4, you’ll feel grumpy, groggy and disoriented. These make up the bulk of your cycle, and you do not want to wake up from either.

Get Sleep and Don’t Wake up Grumpy!
Waking up during stage 3 or 4 in the morning because of your alarm clock is probably why you hate mornings so much. So lets change it up!

Knowing that each cycle takes about 90 minutes to arrive at completion, and that the average person takes about 15 minutes to fall asleep, you can calculate the best time to wake up from whenever you want to go to sleep. Remember, you’re aiming for stage 1, which lasts 10 – 15 minutes, so you want to wake yourself up 5 or 10 minutes after the end of your last cycle.

If that doesn’t help, you can try turning your phone off or putting it to airplane mode at night (your phone gives off tiny electrical pulses some people are sensitive to and keeps you awake,) and you can try reading a book instead of a lit screen – studies have shown that LED screens have the same effect on the brain as caffeine.

Motivation Monday: Don’t be Afraid of Graduation!

It’s been almost a month since graduation!

Post-graduation Jitters
The reality of post-grad life is finally setting in – maybe you’ve moved back with your parents until you can get on your feet, maybe your friends from school are all going their separate ways, or maybe you’re just anxious about what comes next – but the heart of the matter is that early post-grad life sort of sucks.

A lot of people let that go to their heads and slide into inactivity and laziness. We know it’s daunting – how could it not be? The last 18 years of your life have been dedicated to education, and now you suddenly need to find a job and an apartment and get your life going, all at once. It’s scary, and some people get so scared they do nothing at all.

But put down those Doritos, turn off those non-stop Netflix playbacks of whatever terrible sitcom you’ve been binge-watching, and sit up straight!

Get out there and conquer!
You can do this! You can’t stop trying just because you’re afraid. Everyone’s afraid when they first start out. That’s okay. Just don’t let it beat you – keep moving forward! It might take a while to find a job, or an apartment, but you have no excuse to stop trying!
