You want to be the first person to set foot on Mars? You want to run your own online shoe sales company? You want to get promoted to team leader? No matter what your goals, big or small, you’re going to have to take concrete steps to get them out of the wish zone into the fulfilment zone.
Write out your goals
In order to achieve anything need to be working towards clear objectives every day. The best way to do that is to write out specifically what you are aiming to achieve. Keep a written record of your daily, weekly, monthly goals and make a point of checking in with them and revising every single day to keep yourself on track and motivated.
Keep track of your progress
As you check in with your goals everyday, make a point of marking down your achievements. Keep track of successes and failures.
Reaching your goal will never be a straight line. There will be detours and setbacks but for the purposes of working toward it, imagine a straight line between where you start and the end achievement of your goal. Keeping track of your progress means knowing where you are on that line. Just a couple of steps in, a third of the way there, three quarters etc.
Acknowledge your successes
On the way to achieving your ultimate goal you will accomplish smaller ones along the way. A small goal might be finishing a course or writing out a proposal or revising your schedule to consistently wake up half and hour earlier to meditate. You know what your small goals are because you’ve got them written down.
Don’t just accomplish them then move on. By acknowledging your moments of success you will motivate yourself to keep going. It will help you feel like you’re on track and all this striving has a definite, achievable point.
Don’t stop with a pat on the back. When you are proud of what you’ve done reward yourself in some way. It doesn’t have to be huge. It could be a full day off for a walk in the nature preserve, or those new shoes you’ve been wanting or a celebratory dinner.
Incentivize yourself as you go to keep yourself motivated. The bigger the successes the bigger the rewards!
