Intend To Make The Most of Each Day

We’ve talked about to-do lists before and the importance of planning out what you want to do with each day. To-do lists are great and helpful. Another way to go about planning your day/life is to set an intention for it.

 

An intention is a way of creating space for desires to take hold

You might feel stressed out with all the things you need to get done everyday, so you’re looking for ways to bring peace and stability to your life. So you set an intention to find ways to center yourself. You might do that by waking up half an hour earlier everyday to write in a journal. Or taking half an hour out of your lunch break to get outside and walk without a phone or iPod or any other device on your person.

 

Set your day with an intention

An intention for the day might be to stay on task. I will not waste time scrolling through irrelevant social media posts today. You might decide to make positivity your intention for the day. I will counter every negative thought with a positive one today.

 

A great time to set your intention for the day is first thing in the morning. Before you get out of bed, before you read any headlines in the news, before you check your email or social media. Take a few deep breaths, center yourself and set your intention for the day.

 

Check back with your intention throughout the day

The day gets going and you make a mistake at work. You respond immediately with negative words for yourself. Your intention is forgotten in the chaos of the day.

 

As you go through your day, make a point of checking back in with your intention. Put a virtual stickie on your computer, or add it to your calendar for the day so you don’t lose sight of it.

 

Use intentions of help you grow into the person you’ve always wanted to be.

Ever wonder how you can get more done everyday? Here’s something you might not realize, the higher your positivity, the higher your productivity!

 

You are a mirror to yourself

It might sound a little too smile and the whole world smiles with you simplistic to be true, but it is. You are a mirror to yourself and everything you think and do reflects back to you. Being productive makes you feel good about yourself and feeling good will make you more productive. It’s kind of like the opposite of a vicious cycle!

 

Get the cycle started

The key is getting the cycle started. Make a point of deciding to bring more positivity to what you do and that will encourage the productivity. Or conversely, bring up your productivity a bit, feel good what you’re accomplishing and boost your positivity.

 

Believe in your abilities

You will never be able to boost your productivity if you don’t believe you’re capable of doing more than you’re doing right now. If you don’t really believe you can do more then are you sure you’re in the right place? Is this something you want to continue with? If you don’t believe you can do more then you certainly can’t.

 

If you believe you can do more then you’re ready to lay down the foundation for achieving your productivity goals.

 

Schedule your productivity

To increase your productivity you need to set clear guidelines for yourself. Written guidelines that you adhere to. That means lists. Priority lists of things that MUST get done, should get done and wouldn’t it be great if I could get it done for each day.

 

Block out time for your lists and don’t finish the day without completing the MUST list. Hopefully you’ll also get through the should list. Wouldn’t it be great if you also made a dent in that list as well?

 

Plan out your lists for tomorrow at the end of today so as soon as you’re ready to get to work, you know what needs to get done.

 

At the end of the week create a master list for the week ahead. By filling your time in advance you are much more likely to stick to the plan when the time actually comes.

 

Seeing your accomplishments feels good

As soon as you start seeing progress you immediately start feeling better about what you can do. The better you’re feeling, the more motivated you’ll be to keep on doing what you’re doing to increase that productivity. Your productivity is a reflection of your abilities. Feeling good about your abilities encourages you to push yourself to the next level.

 

Feelings are contagious

All those good feelings you’re starting to have about yourself won’t stay limited to yourself for long. Your positive outlook and ability to get things done will inspire those around you to find their own happiness and increase their own productivity.

 

Problems seem less daunting

If you consistently feel like you’re out of time and failing in the accomplishing department it’s hard to stay positive, if however you’re seeing positive outcomes on a consistent basis, then when problems do arise you’re much more likely to take them in stride and believe they are things that can be overcome, rather than things that will can stop you in your tracks. Because you believe you can get things done, you feel good about yourself. Productivity leads to positivity and positivity leads to productivity. It’s another one of life’s cycles.

You like your job, you’ve been doing it a while, it’s easy to become complacent and unmotivated. The key to staying fresh and motivated, to keep moving forward and expanding your horizons is maintaining your attitude.  Not only will a great attitude help you stay happy and fulfilled – as a byproduct you’ll want to push yourself faster and harder. You’ll be excited about achieving new things.

What if this was the last day of your life?

In a previous article about Steve Jobs we mentioned the question he asks himself everyday, “If this was the last day of my life would I want to do what I’m about to do today?”

Ask yourself that question to help you put your days into perspective. You only have so many days to accomplish all the things you want. You have priorities, you have goals and dreams. Ensure as many of your days as possible are bringing you closer to those priorities, are helping brings those dreams out into the light of day.

Giving vs. receiving

All of us spend so much time thinking about what we can get. Things we can buy, what someone can give us professionally or personally. Things that we believe will enhance our sense of self worth. All those get things are good, but the satisfaction they bring is fleeting. Sure you feel good when you buy a new gadget, but soon the new gadget becomes just another gadget and you start longing for the next one. Sure that person helped you get to the next level, but now that you’re there, you’re already chasing after the next person. Sometimes after all that chasing you realize you’ve only been running on a treadmill, never actually getting anywhere. Sometimes the only way you will feel like you’re getting somewhere is to get off the treadmill altogether. To give yourself the chance to be the giver rather than the receiver. The benefits of helping someone else are twofold.

  1. You’ve helped someone else
  2. You feel really good about yourself.

And that good feeling you’ve created for yourself has the tendency to stick around a lot longer than the good feeling of a getting new thing because it’s mixed with pride and accomplishment and an all-around, good job me!

 Cultivate some patience

Heard a new song on the radio and you want it? No problem it’s a click away. Got a hankering for some pizza? Delivered, take-away or dine in – your choice.  Suddenly interested in a course on inhabitants of the Jurassic? An online course is as close as your tablet. With so much so easily available, it’s easy to think everything should be on demand. The perfect job. The exact experience you’re looking for. Then it’s not and with the world still at your fingertips, you start to feel depressed, like nothing is possible. Attitude adjustment! Have patience. Work towards your goals. Don’t expect them to materialize right away. Think of the three little pigs. Sure you can have a house of straw in about five minutes but it will blow down even faster. A house of sticks might take a little longer to build, but it will come down with the wolf’s laugh. The house of bricks will take some time to build, but it’s going to withstand whatever life throws at it and when you look at that house you built – boy does it feel good!

Keep yourself engaged

One of the easiest ways to get into a rut is having nothing to look forward to. No carrot just outside your reach. Have you achieved the goals you set out for yourself? If not are you still working towards them? Does the thought of your goals add a spring to your step in the mornings?

If you have reached all your goals do you have new ones? They don’t have to be monumental goals (although they can), but they do need to be objectives to keep things interesting.

Pay attention to your inner voice

Like it or not that little voice inside your head sways a lot of influence over you. If it’s always telling you that you can’t do something then you’re going to believe it. If it’s always telling you to keep going because you CAN then you’ll believe that too. You don’t have to agree with what that voice says. You are the narrator of that story. Change it if you want to.

Motivation Monday: Be positive!

Just like the quote above, stay positive and patient during your job search. It’s a tough market out there right now and there is more competition. But that shouldn’t get your hopes up. If you think positively, good things will happen. Don’t worry, that job will come. And when it does, you will appreciate it even more due to the time, effort and patience you put into it!
